DVD – Climate refugees
CLIMATE REFUGEES uncovers the unbelievable plight of people around the world displaced by climatically induced environmental disasters. The documentary illuminates for the first time the human face of climate change as civilization now finds itself facing the confluence of overpopulation, lack of resources and a changing climate. Traveling the world and interviewing several of the 25 million climate refugees now on the run, along with scholars, politicians and the like, CLIMATE REFUGEES brings to light the heart-wrenching truth of what is quickly becoming mankind?s greatest challenge.

The rich are getting richer and the poor poorer – workshop notes
We discussed options for 2.3 to start with:
– Tanzania
– Samoa / Tonga
– India
– USA and Afghanistan
Talked about using the data as there was lots of it out there. Especially data from NZ which you could compare with other countries to show a comparison.
Then we talked about the Y10 Social Action that many schools do as a Starter Year 10 Programme:
-Students take a social action and can be as simple or as complex as they make it – their grade depends on HOW they write it up:
Ideas:
– Posters / Social Media Posts / Letters to MP’s, Editors, community people
– Sock Drives (and other needed things)
– Petitions (sent to Amnesty International, MP’s……)
– Fundraisers and forward funds to community groups
– Freedom Day Challenge (Through Amnesty International)

Quizlets – students love these.
The first is a Quizlet on the Christchurch Earthquake for 11GEO extreme natural events (hopefully the link works). I use Quizlet Live and shuffle the teams each time, to help reinforce key points.
The second one is a quizlet on ‘temporal variations’ for tourism development in Hawaii for 13GEO
And the third one is another quizlet for The Amazon for Natural environments for 12GEO
Get amongst it all – Jacinda Andrews from Diocesan is the Queen of these – oh to have the energy myself!

Coastal Erosion – What to do?
For a coastal nation fixated on home ownership, coastal erosion represents a problem. Large parts of the country were built in the wrong place, under the assumption the land would stay put. For most of the areas likely to be hit by rising seas, there are decades to prepare before the water starts lapping at their door.
There’s no such luck in Granity, Ngakawau and Hector on the West Coast of the South Island.

What can you do with Geography?
How often do your students ask this question?
Let them see this handout shared with us all from Aidan from HPSS – it has heaps of different jobs that Geographers can do.

Mock examinations are up!
The “mock” examinations have been uploaded here this morning.
Please do check through the examinations yourselves (and the schedules) – they have been moderated by AGTA committee members but it is important you do this as well.
With regard to the skills examinations and the scholarship exam:
- The Level 1 examination uses the 2012 Resource booklet on Sydney.
- The Level 2 and 3 examination are new resource booklets – they are presented here in a pdf version only.
- The scholarship examination uses the 2011 Resource booklet alongside a supplementary booklet.
Not a member of AGTA but want to use these mock exams – well, contact us at agtassociation@gmail.com

Charles Johnston from AUT spoke at our recent planning day about Auckland as a tourist destination.
The talk was well received by the teachers present. Lots of ideas were discussed but many staff thought it would be a great idea to explore for research or issue.

Promoting Geography at ASHS – THIS IS SO COOL.
The ASHS library has an internal window / display area looking out onto a busy corridor. The librarians use the space for promoting various topics and each display normally runs for 3 / 4 weeks.
The wonderful ladies who manage our library set up a display to promote geography for me. This coincided with our open evening during week three this term and drew plenty of interest. The theme was “I am a geographer” with a range of topics from exploration to technology in geography.
I have attached some photos and a link to a google folder with more photos.
What a fantastic thing to do Kevin Harvey at ASHS.
Stop Disasters Game
This website has games for each type of extreme natural event(from wildfires to earthquakes). It is a bit like the computer game civilisation/settlers. You have certain things you need to build, you can also protect your city/area by adding warning systems and building schools/community centres to provide education, you can make your current buildings more resistant to your ENE by upgrading them, or remove at risk buildings. And of course you only have a certain budget to make changes with…….

THanks Heather Roberts (SCC) for sharing this website with us all.
